Global warming and climate change. Income inequality and poverty. Pollution and environmental degradation. Starvation and malnutrition. Pandemics and pestilence. Although there are multiple causes, one of the common denominators for all of them is too many people on a planet where resources are finite and limited.

Although science is being called on to deliver answers to these problems as never before, there is one answer that dares not speak its name – population control.

bomb_book.jpgDidn’t use to be that way. Back in the sixties books like The Population Bomb were warning of the dangers of too many people. Whether it was contraception, limiting the number of births, issuing licenses to have children, tax policies encouraging childless couples or other measures to limit and even turn back the number of people populating our planet, the subject of population control was all the rage.

As pointed out in a recent article entitled Junk-Science Peddlers by Dawn Hucklebridge in the Nation Magazine even Republicans were talking population control.

Republican activists helped to establish Planned Parenthood, and Republican lawmakers worked to secure its funding; female Republican Party activists fought to legalize contraception and expand access; President Nixon first called for a national family-planning program and created Title X. Well known Republicans like Barry Goldwater and his wife, Peggy, John D. Rockefeller Jr.; President Eisenhower; and even the first President Bush were birth-control champions and reformers.

With the hi-jacking of the Republican Party by abortion and contraception opponents who were able to attach the incongruous term Pro-Life to their cause coupled with the relative silence on the issue by the Democratic Party and other progressive organizations, the entire movement for population control sunk far beneath the radar.

Statistics released by the United Nations show the world population increasing by 30% between 1990 and 2010. This is scary stuff.

Scientific American reported that “We are losing upwards of 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest daily, and significantly degrading another 80,000 acres every day on top of that. Along with this loss and degradation, we are losing some 135 plant, animal and insect species every day—or some 50,000 species a year—as the forests fall.”

paradise_to_parking_lot.pngEvery ten years, an area the size of Great Britain is paved over. This loss of habitat plus the extraction of resources and pollution is bringing the Earth to the brink of a sixth “mass extinction event.” Only this time, the culprit isn’t a massive asteroid impact or volcanic explosions or the inexorable drifting of continents – it’s us.

population-growth-chart.pngRight now there are estimated 7 billion people on this planet with projections of 9 billion or more by 2050. The human species is not endanger of vanishing because of low population numbers, but unless science comes up with more ways to feed more people with fewer resources, there could be a very terrible day of reckoning.

Science is a remarkable tool of human ingenuity and it might very well come up with a way to do that, but at what cost? Will billions be eating diets composed of processed seaweed? Will monoculture and Monsanto like firms with genetically engineered foods control the world?  Will humans be ensconced in tightly regulated, repressed and rigid societies? Will the earth truly be a place where we would want to live?

earth_and_peopole_on_scale.jpgThe continuing and never ending increase in human population is the 800 pound gorilla that affects and underlies climate change, immigration and almost any other issue that is found in the room. Controlling population growth needs to part of the long-term strategy to solve all these other issues.

This is going to be an enormously tough nut to crack. It’s just not just the irrationality of social conservatives and their evangelical allies, but the all-too legitimate concerns that we need to increase populations, especially in industrial societies, as there will not be enough young people to support an aging population living longer due to the ability of science to extend life expectancy.

Failure to address population control is not an option. There will be problems associated with any program that can stabilize and eventually lead to a reduction in the number of people inhabiting this planet, but they are temporary problems and pale in comparison to the horrors to come if populations continue to increase.

people_on_planet.jpgPopulation control is not a fringe issue – it is THE issue. Along with all the progressive issues undertaken and advanced by the Democratic Party, population control must be addressed. I would like to invite the readers of the Riverside Co. Democratic News to begin the discussion by submitting your ideas on how the Party should address this issue and offer up ways in which a humane, viable and comprehensive program to stabilize and eventually reduce the human population can be enacted.

Please send your thoughts on this subject to Let Riverside County rekindle the discussion.

corner_chair.jpgTHE CHAIR’S CORNER

This is the first edition of the newly revamped Newsletter of the Riverside County Democratic Party.  I extend a big THANK YOU to Lanny Swerdlow for taking on this responsibility.  I have full confidence that each month Lanny will be providing us with an informative and entertaining newsletter.

The California Primary is on June 5th.  Many of you may have already voted by mail – and to that I say, “Thank You.”  If you haven’t mailed your ballot yet – please mail soon and don’t forget to place two stamps on the envelope.

Make sure you read and follow the directions on the ballot very closely.  There are numerous candidates running for many of these offices – make sure you don’t vote for more candidates than allowed.

vote.jpgVoting for more candidates than allowed is called an “overvote” and on a ballot such as this with multiple candidates on different columns, it gets confusing if close attention isn’t paid.   If you vote for more candidates than allowed your vote for that office will not be counted.

Please, tell your friends, neighbors and co-workers that voting is crucial and encourage them to send in their ballot soon – or go to the polls on Tuesday, June 5th.  And if you forget to mail in your ballot – you may drop off at any polling place in Riverside County on election day.

And while you’re at it – please make a phone call or two (or more!) in support of your candidate of choice.

enodrsed_candidates2-page-001.jpgDemocratically Yours,

Steve Ruth

Chair, Riverside County Democratic Party

As you all know, Senate Bill 54, the California Values Act (aka Sanctuary State), has come under attack in Southern California.  The Republican Hate (Tea) Party is waging war at all City Council meetings asking for resolutions and/or ordnances against SB54.

The hate has descended on Riverside County!  Beaumont lost 3 to 2 on April 17th.  The next day, Corona had a SB54 “discussion” and are awaiting to see if it will show up on the next City Council Agenda, May 16.  I believe Indio is battling it, as well.

A few dirty Republican Hate (Tea) Party tactics:

  1. misinformation.jpgMisinformation, misinformation, misinformation.  Hate Party comes armed to the teeth full of misinformation and bad statistics about immigrants.  According to them, all immigrants are in gangs like MS-13, and all are rapists and criminals!  It’s difficult to say whether they actually believe all this or if it’s all FOX news because they are repeating word-for-word the same false rhetoric one sees and hears on TV.

  1. Lies.jpgHate (Tea) Party LIES about how they hate people from outta town who come speak at their city council meetings telling them how they should run their city.  BUT the Republican Hate Party does that VERY thing!  At our Beaumont City Council meeting, they brought in people from Claremont, Corona, Riverside and even Apple Valley!  Robert Rodriguez, Jr., is from Apple Valley, yep, the guy running for Secretary of State, was at our little city council meeting.  He was as dark as I am but in a suit wearing a Trump tie probably made in China!  You better believe I gave him a piece of my mind!  I reminded him that he was the same color as I was and that we’re both going to be riding together when ICE deports us both!

speak_meet.jpgEVERYONE is allowed to speak at ALL City Council meetings!  We MUST NOT be afraid to bring others in to speak!  The opposition does it!

  1. The Republican Hate (Tea) Party strives to get to city council meetings EARLY!  They try to hog up the front rows!  Then, they will place their signs on their laps and have another Republican take the picture!  The pictures they take look like all of us seated behind them are with them!  Then they post those pics to their social media and make it look like they have all this support against SB54!

I have now taken to flipping them off when they start snapping pictures of me!  If you see pics of me out there flipping off the camera!  No, it’s not Veritas!  It REALLY is me flipping off a Republican Hate Party Social Media Troll!

ENOUGH ALREADY!!! – #Take back the house 2018! –

It was big news for a day when Senator Diane Feinstein appeared at CaDEM’s State Convention in February seeking the Party’s endorsement for her re-election and didn’t get it. After serving for over a quarter of a century as California’s senior U.S. Senator,  it must have been somewhat disheartening to not only not receive the Party’s endorsement but to receive fewer votes then her main challenger former State Senate President pro tempore Kevin DeLeon.

That she had become out-of-touch with the evolving progressive positions of California Democrats is not exactly breaking news but perhaps the most egregious disconnect occurred over the issues of the death penalty and marijuana legalization.

newspaper_feinstein.jpgFeinstein has long been in favor of capital punishment. It was her support of the death penalty that helped catapult her to victory in the 1992 special election that pitted her against John Seymour who had been appointed to the U.S. Senate two years earlier by Governor Pete Wilson as his replacement to the U.S. Senate after he was elected Governor.

As for the change in heart regarding the death penalty, Sen. Feinstein told the L.A. Times “Several years ago I changed my view of the death penalty. It became crystal clear to me that the risk of unequal application is high and its effect on deterrence is low.” It was kind of a low-key change with little mention made of it although when constituents wrote her about the issue she responded with a letter informing them of her change of position.

appro_commitee.jpgFeinstein was one of the Senate’s most adamant drug warriors favoring almost all War on Drugs legislation and opposing most efforts to reform federal marijuana law. Senator Feinstein was the only Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee to oppose the Farr/Rorhrabacher amendment which prevented federal money from being used to enforce federal marijuana laws against medical marijuana dispensaries in states that legalized medical marijuana.

Strongly opposed to Prop. 64, legalization proponents criticized her for spreading “reefer madness disinformation” by stating that when she was a member of the California’s Women’s Board of Terms and Parole she saw too many criminals who “began with marijuana and went on to hard drugs.”

Unlike her change in thinking on the death penalty which evolved over an extended period of time, her change on marijuana legalization was far more swift coming not much more than two months after failing to receive the Party’s endorsement.

prop_64_wins.jpgFeinstein told the Sacramento based McClasky Media Syndicate that “Federal law enforcement agents should not arrest Californians who are adhering to California law.” Although now supportive, she still exudes caution on the issue explaining “My state has legalized marijuana for personal use, and as California continues to implement this law, we need to ensure we have strong safety rules to prevent impaired driving and youth access, similar to other public health issues like alcohol.”

pat_harris.jpgPat Harris, who also sought the Party’s endorsement for the U.S. Senate, commented on her new positions stating, Unlike the Senator I have always been and always will be not just a supporter, but a fighter both for cannabis legalization nationwide and the elimination of the death penalty. At the rate she is going, by November Senator Feinstein might actually be a Democrat.”

Kevin DeLeon, asked to comment on the Senator’s new positions, did not respond.

Considerably ahead of either DeLeon or Harris in the polls, Feinstein is expected to easily receive re-election. Although the change in positions certainly could be related to a fear of losing votes to her opponent on the November ballot, it may have more to do with Feinstein seeing herself as a mainstream Democrat and her old positions were now anything but mainstream.

With her change of heart on the death penalty and marijuana legalization, she will be able to bask in the glowing approval of almost all Democrats in what will most likely be her final term as California’s senior U.S. Senator.

John Bolton’s appointment as national security adviser does not require Senate confirmation, so what can congress do to check a warmongering lunatic? Congress is not powerless. John Bolton is not a savvy analyst of global affairs with a record of smart thinking on the diplomatic and defense challenges facing the United States. He’s the opposite of that.   Read More.

The US banking establishment has been at war with the post office since at least 1910, when the Postal Savings Bank Act established a public savings alternative to a private banking system that had crashed the economy in the Bank Panic of 1907.   The American Bankers Association was quick to respond, forming a Special Committee on Postal Savings Legislation to block any extension of the new service.  Read more.
